Canton Dominoes Game Rules

  • Canton is a 2, 3 or 4 player dominoes game invented by Fredrick Berndt in which players score by forming and capturing melds using dominoes placed in a common train and dominoes in their own hand.
  • Each player gets certain number of tiles at the beginning of each round.
  • Remaining tiles are set aside forming a boneyard.
  • First turn or lead in the first round is decided by a draw of lot (each player draws one tile and highest tile starts the round). In subsequent rounds player sitting next to the lead for current round gets to take first turn.
  • The player taking first turn starts a common train by placing a tile and immediately draws one tile from the boneyard.
  • In subsequent turns, players play a tile either at the beginning of the train or, at the end of the train. Tiles are placed side by side in the train and not by joining their ends as in other domino games (such as draw or block games).
  • If player can create a meld (as specified below) then he/she takes it and places it next to them face-down. Player must also draw a tile from the boneyard (irrespective of whether or not he/she can capture a meld). If player can not create any meld, he/she simply passes turn to the next player.
  • If player creates a meld, he/she gets to play again which involves same sequence of playing a tile to the train, drawing a tile from the boneyard and capturing meld if possible. Once boneyard is empty, player can simply play tiles and capture melds without drawing from the boneyard.
  • Melds are created as following
Pair - A Pair is made up of a tile from player's hand plus one tile from either end of the train if it totals 12.
Triplet - A tile from player's hand plus end tiles of the train (both ends) if it totals 10, 20, or 30.
Triplet - A tile from player's hand plus two adjacent tiles from either side of the train if it totals 10, 20, or 30.
  • The round is over as soon as one player dominoes (meaning player is left with no tile). Winner of each round scores remaining pips count from other players' hands.
  • The game is played for multiple rounds and a player scoring 200 or more at the end of a round wins the game (highest scorer if more than one player score over 200).
